Tag Archives: QLD Portrait Photographer of the Year 2013

Last year I started offering one on one mentoring sessions to photographers that were requesting a more specialised day as apposed to a group newborn posing class.

I absolutely love teaching one on ones – every session is completely different because they are tailored to each individual photographer.

We have covered everything from creating the perfect studio environment, working with babies safely, camera technique. posing to post production.  And of course anything relating to marketing and pricing for their business.

There is so much involved when working with babies; understanding them and how to pose them safely is something I can’t emphasise enough.  I have been a photographer for 10 years now and have been working with newborns solely for the past 4, and during this time have seen quite a few images of babies posed dangerously and that’s why I decided to start sharing what I have learnt.  During the last few years I have gained so much valuable information from medical professionals who work with newborns so I can better understand what these precious little lives are capable of.   And not forgetting that every baby is SO different and will not go into every single pose.

And we can forget the gorgeous models –  every time I put a call out for newborn models I’m blown away at how many responses I get!   I’m so grateful to all of the families who bring their brand new babies along to be photographed and posed.

This is little 10 day Ethan who came along to model for a mentoring session I had with two photographers last month in my Kenmore Hills studio in Brisbane…

    Hi Kelly,
I have purchased your online course over at Creative Live and loved it. I am doing children’s photography at the moment but would love to break into newborns. I have four children myself and love babies! I am really interested in a one on one mentoring or workshop with you. I live in NZ, but happy to travel to Brisbane.

Let me know when is a good time and what you charge? Any chance you could fit me in before March 24th as my mum is here in NZ (over from America) and could watch the children. I can work something out though if that doesn’t work for you!

    Regards,
    LoriReplyCancel

Why oh why do you have to live on the other side of the planet? I’d LOVE to attend a workshop (ok I’d really love the 1 on 1) on posing and lighting with you. Do you have any upcoming stuff in europe?

    Love,

    Hi Kelly,
When you come to NYC would you possibly have time for a one on one session? If so how much would it be? Thank you.ReplyCancel

Finally I have got around to blogging all of the gorgeous babies that came along to CreativeLIVE in May for my newborn posing class.  It’s so hard to believe looking back that I photographed 23 babies in those 4 days! I thought there was 22 but when I recounted there were 23!  Definitely a record.  And I wont lie, I could hardly walk on the Sunday and  slept the whole way home!  🙂

Thank you again to all of the amazing parents that brought their little ones along to be photographed.  And also again to the 8 photographers that joined me over the 3 days ~ I’m so glad we met x

I am still blown away each day by the emails that I recieve from people who have watched the class – from all over the world!   THANK YOU!  I loved being able to share what I know with you I would do it again 😉

And a special thank you to LOVE THAT PROP, BRAND NEW BABE, MONKEY MOO MOO, DROPS & PROPS, PICSIE PROPS & MR. & MRS. AND CO. For all of the beautiful props they sent along for me to use during the class.

It was so amazing to watch you work. We have had a newborn session since your CL, and it was so much better. I don’t know if we were more confident, or just had the best baby ever, but what a difference it made know just what to do. I know that my business partner and best friend, Mollie (who was part of your audience) was just giddy over our recent session. We hope to achieve your level of excellence in every part of our business. Thank you for giving us the tools to do so!ReplyCancel

Putting my excitement into words is NOT easy!!!

Last weekend was the annual judging of the AIPP QLD Professional Photography Awards for 2013 here in Brisbane, with the Awards dinner held on Monday night.

Sunday I went to watch the judging of both the Family and Portrait categories along with many other hopeful photographers eager to see their images come up and be judged by 5 Master Photographers.  Each judge gives the image a score out of 100 and the average score is given to your print.   It’s exciting and nerve racking all at the same time and I love it!!!

So this year my main goal is to achieve my Master of Photography status with the AIPP in September at the National Awards, to gain your Masters you have to earn 15 points within 5 years of becoming an accredited member of the AIPP.  Each Silver award is worth one point and each Gold award is worth two and you can only enter 4 images.   I need two points!!!   and these points can only be achieved at the National Awards not State.

At our State Awards we’re allowed to enter a maximum of 12 images but only 4 images into each category.  So I entered 4 into Family and 4 into Portrait in hope to find my 4 strongest images to send off to APPA’s in September.  I was ecstatic that my 8 entries were awarded 1 Gold, 2 Silver with Distinction and 4 Silvers.   Never in my wildest dreams did I expect at the awards dinner that my awarded images would win both categories and then I would be announced the AIPP QLD Professional Photographer of the Year for 2013!!!!!!

WOW is all I say every time I look at the trophy sitting in my office!   I just can’t describe how it feels, I had absolutely know idea that I would ever come close to winning something like this!!  And I’m only the 4th women to have their name on this trophy!!!!

I left my finished digital images with Foto Frenzy for printing and Matting and then the delivery of my print case, as I had to be in Seattle before the entry deadline.  Darren did such an amazing job  – I can’t thank him enough!

I also want to thank all of the judges and volunteers who put in countless hours of their valuable time to help us on our quest in becoming better photographers by entering these awards.  If it wasn’t for them these events wouldn’t be possible.  I also want to congratulate all of the other Category winners and finalists – their entries were AMAZING!  Queensland is full of so many talented to photographers.

You can see all of the category winners here…. GALLERY OF WINNERS
