The importance of family photography

family photographer

Most people know me as a newborn photographer, but since moving into my new Brisbane photography studio, I am branching into family photography more and more.

When you ask people what they would rescue from their burning house, the most common answer is “family photographs”. When people panic, they would rather grab photos than valuable jewellery or technology. This is a powerful force which tells us more about the role of family photography in our lives. We have a constant desire to distil our most precious moments into images.

Photography is a huge part of our history. For the past 200 years it has captured the history of the world and of families. It has given us a glimpse of the past, whilst preserving our family and cultural histories. People or events that photographed now will perhaps never be the same again, so taking advantage of any opportunities to take photos allows for the remembrance of things as they once were.

These photographs outlive us, they last for generations.  They matter because they freeze moments of our lives which pass unremarkably and which seem to have little importance to us at the time. The significance, however, may be for others who search for the person we once were or the places we once knew. Like jigsaw pieces that complete the larger picture of our lives, these photographs are what tell our stories long after we are gone.

Photographs can grab our attention and speak directly to our emotions. Our images can express joy and sorrow, wonder and sympathy. Every human emotion can find a place in photography. As a portrait photographer, this art form has given me a voice to express feelings when I cannot find words. It has allowed me to develop a visual language for some of the most difficult life situations and emotions.

Photography allows us to preserve these memories for the days we may not remember, or when we can no longer remember.

11 Years in the Making

Kelly Brown, Brisbane family photographer, photographs a beautiful family for the first time in 11 years.

The couple in the video below were last photographed together 11 years ago, on their wedding day. Their children will cherish these images for many years to come. Photographs manifest emotions that words cannot. These are so important to your loved ones, and especially when those moments are no longer fresh in our minds.

And, especially for portraits, these visual documents of a moment in time become ever more valuable as time goes by.

When was the last time you were photographed with your family? I am truly enjoying capturing the love of a family. I would love to hear from you if you are interested in having your family captured, just as the family below did. You can find out more about a portrait photography session on my website.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kelly

When I started my little photography business in Switzerland years ago, I would never have thought that so many people will ask for family shootings.

Especially in these days where every smartphone has a not too bad camera, it’s very interesting. I completely agree, it is very important to everybody for us.

OT: I wish I could do newborn photos like you do. Please please come to Switzerland for a workshop (yes I know, there’s one in Berlin Germany…).

    Thanks, kind regards from Switzerland

    Yvonne
