AIPP Australian Professional Photography Awards 2012 (APPA’s)

WOW!!!  What an incredible time I’ve had at the APPA’s in Melbourne over the last 5 days!!  We have just arrived home and are completely exhausted, and a little hungover from celebrating at the Awards dinner last night  😉

This was my 3rd year entering and I am COMPLETELY blown away with the results.  Overwhelmed is an understatement!!!

We can enter 4 prints and they can be entered into one or more categories.  This year I entered 1 in the family categ0ry and 3 into the portrait category.

Before I go on and tell you how I went I want to explain why I enter the awards – bare with me …

I am naturally a competitive person so I like to push myself.  The awards isn’t like a running race, it’s a measure of how good our work is within our industry and if it’s at a professional standard.  Every year I challenge myself to create the best quality work I can and to gain feedback so that I can learn and grow as a photographer.  It isn’t easy putting yourself out there to be judged – I actually felt quite sick watching, anticipating if the next print to come up for judging was mine!  But I wouldn’t have it any other way  🙂  And I can’t recommend entering enough, not just for personal reasons but for the industry as a whole – to continually raise the standards within our profession.

By participating in the APPA’s I am accumulating “award points” which have counted towards achieving Associate and to hopefully one year soon my Master status within AIPP.

This weekend I was surrounded by so many brilliant creatives and seeing their beautifully presented prints/entries be rewarded was just amazing.  Check out this short behinds the scenes of the APPA’s created by the extremely talented Matt & Katie – http://vimeo.com/43014393

And, I also want to say a MASSIVE thank you to the AIPP, the judges and all the volunteers who gave up their time to make this event happen.  They worked tirelessly to get through nearly 3200 entries from 850+ photographers. THANK YOU!!!

Ok, here are my 4 prints which I am extremely proud to say won me the title of 2012 AIPP Australian Creative Photographer of the Year!!!!!!  Still can’t quite believe it!

    Dear Mrs. Kelly Brown,
I came accross your award winning Portrait of a lovely Senior Citizen Couple while surfing the Internet. I was so impressed by the wonderful photograph, I took the liberty of publishing it in the in-house journal, HORIZON of our Saraswat Senior Citizens Association, Virar(India) of which I am the current editor. HORIZON is a small in-house magazine of our association and we print only 35 copies on DTP for circulation among our members (of average age about 75). There is no commercial interest whatever in printing the portrait in our Mag. I hope you will condone our this one-time small indiscretion and grant us your de-facto permission to publish the photograph. We are a very poor association and we’re not in a position to pay any royalty for the same. So, please confirm your consent to publish this once
by return e-mail. I am sending the mag. to the local printer in a day or two. So, I can still withdraw the photo if you don’t agree, but, I hope you will be gracious enough to give your consent. By the way, most of our members who have greatly
appreciated the photograph and wish to congratulate you. I am
eagerly awaiting your reply. Thanking you in anticipation.
    Yours Truly,
    Vasant Hattangadi
